 CAR CRIME CAMPAIGN

REDUCE CAR CRIME

car being broken into
The Safer Leicester Partnership are reminding all shoppers coming into Leicester City centre during Christmas and the new year to;

  • secure their cars
  •  remove all valuable items from view
  • Remove Sat Navs from vehicles and wipe away any suction marks.

Please don't buy items in the sales and think "I'll take these back to the car and then continue shopping".  If you do that, then you may find that your shopping may not be in the car when you return!  Don't make it easy for thieves this year, keep all your possessions out of sight.  If you can't carry your shopping with you, then make sure you lock it away, out of sight, in the boot.  IF YOU LEAVE IT, THEN YOU MAY LOSE IT!

This reminder is intended to ensure Leicester maintains its record in keeping theft from vehicles down during the new year sales and we continue to offer a successful shopping experience. Simple steps to keep your car safe include:

  • Remove all valuable items, such as Satellite navigation systems and car radio's, from your car.

  • Clean the suction marks from the removed sat nav systems from your windscreen - if thieves see these, they may try to break in to check the glove compartment.

  • Ensure all items are either concealed from view or removed, regardless of their value - ensure your car has nothing to draw the attention or catch the eye of a potential thief.

Remember, Leicester is a safe place to come to shop. These simple steps will ensure a trip to Leicester city centre ends as successfully as it starts.

Secure your 'Sat Nav':

Satellite navigation equipment, or ‘sat navs’, are the latest in modern technology for your car and are also the hottest property for thieves at the moment.

Despite countless police warnings to motorists, reminding them about simple vehicle security, theft of these popular systems is rising.

Some cars are available with in built satellite navigation system; these can’t be taken by opportunist thieves and are much more complex to remove.

Portable sat nav systems are installed in minutes, but removed by a thief in seconds! Here are some simple steps you can take to keep your satellite navigation system safe:

  • Close all windows and lock the doors when you leave your car, even if it’s only for a short while.

  • Don’t leave anything on display in your car. Make sure you remove all parts of the system, including any support cradles and suction pads fitted to the windscreen.

  • Don’t leave the sat nav in your glove compartment – it’s the first place a thief will look. Instead, leave your glove compartment open to show there is nothing inside and take the system and components away with you.

  • If it’s not possible to take the navigation system away with you, then lock it safely in your boot.

  • Keep a record of the make, model and serial number of the equipment. Store this somewhere safe, separately from the vehicle.

  • Mark your system with your postcode and house number or vehicle registration using a special security marker such as an ultra-violet pen or SmartWater. This will make it difficult for thieves to sell your property and will enable police to return the items to you if they are taken
