Vehicle Crime Awareness

As part of making Leicester safer, the Safer Leicester Partnership and Leicestershire Constabulary held a joint awareness raising week at various locations around the City to prevent and reduce theft from motor vehicles.

One of the most common offences that is easily targeted is stealing registration plates. Number plates once stolen are used in the following ways:

  • To leave petrol stations without paying.

  • To avoid parking and speeding fines.

They are also transferred to a similar make and model of car to commit other crimes, as the car will not be picked up by police as being uninsured.  Feel free to come along and mingle with your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, who will be on hand to fit these screws to cars free of charge.

The week-long event was an opportunity for members of the public to talk to crime prevention experts about how to prevent car crime and how to avoid the pitfalls of leaving items in your car when unattended. Free Information packs, crime prevention literature and other resources will also be handed out around the promotional area.

Members of the public will also be invited to take part in a competition and will have the chance to win a top of the range Steering Wheel Lock, courtesy of Safer Leicester Partnership. A vehicle will be positioned at each location and will have been purposely set up with a number of security risks that make the vehicle vulnerable to crime.  The competition will entail spotting those risks and one winner will be drawn at each location.

Safer Leicester Partnership aim to further combat this by securing number plates by the use of security screws.  Security screws are a special 'one way' security screw, which is a straight replacement for standard number plate screws and are a simple way to make things more difficult for the thief.

Vehicle crime accounts for around afifth of recorded crime, and causes immense distress and inconvenience to its victims.

A lot of car crime is opportunistic and could be prevented. For example, about two thirds of all vehicle crime is theft from vehicles. We know that encouraging motorists not to leave goods on display in a car can reduce the risk of these types of theft.

A lot of crime is against cars, motorbikes and bicycles, including the theft of vehicles and theft from vehicles. Crimes can very often be prevented by taking the following simple steps.
