Fortunately most young people don’t have a problem with alcohol or drugs.
However it’s important that all young people and their parents/carers can get clear and up to date information about substances, and where to seek advice, should they need it.
Some young people will not achieve good outcomes in their lives unless they get timely and effective help with their drug or alcohol use. A specialist alcohol and drug service is needed for these young people.
Everyone tends to put a lot of effort into having a good night out in terms of what to wear, where to go and how to get there, but often leave the journey home more a matter of chance.
Personal safety is something you should be aware of. Don’t let the fear of crime stop you from ever going anywhere, but do be aware of the things you can do to stop yourself becoming a victim.
Whether you're out at a club with your mates or making your way home, here are a few simple rules to help to keep yourself safe.
Know your limits and stick to them
If you feel you've had enough alcohol, don't let anyone fob you off with "just one more won't hurt". Alcohol can make you do things you wouldn't normally do. It slows down your reactions and can make you an easier target.
Keep an eye on your drink
If someone buys you a drink, go to the bar with them and make sure you know what you're getting. Keep your drink with you - bottles are easier to dance with than glasses (and harder to slip something into).
Look out for your mates
Keep an eye on them if they've been drinking - they'll do the same for you. If you go out with your mates, go home with them too.
If you do split up make sure you know where everyone should be and check in with each other regularly. Don't ever accept a lift home from a stranger. Catch a cab - the only thing a cab driver feels you owe is the cab fare!
Call a taxi before you leave the club
Don't just jump into the first cab you see when you get outside. Only black cabs are allowed to pick up passengers this way, so even if it is a licenced taxi driver, they're breaking the law. Make sure you always have the number of a taxi firm with you and call from inside the club.
When the cab arrives, ask the driver who they're there for - if they don't say your name, don't get in. Once you're in, check their licence number - it should be on the dashboard. There's safety in numbers. Get a cab with your mates wherever possible.
Remember your rights
You have the right to say no to sex at any time. The law states that a person must actively seek consent and they are breaking the law if they are reckless about whether they obtain consent or not. You do not have to do anything you do not want to do.
